HE400VE 4309124 VGT Turbocharger for Cummins ISM QSM M11

HE400VE

The HE400VE (4309124) is the Holset VGT turbocharger for the Cummins ISM, QSM, and M11 engines. This is the variable-geometry replacement for the older fixed-geometry HX55 on later-model ISM and QSM applications. The VGT design uses electronically controlled vanes in the turbine housing to adjust boost response across the full RPM range, giving the ISM/QSM faster spool-up and better emissions control compared to the fixed-geometry HX55. This listing is for the turbo assembly without the electronic actuator. If your existing actuator tests good, reuse it and run ECM calibration after install. Built new with all new components including a billet compressor wheel, dynamically balanced, ships with gaskets. We supply shops, fleets, and distributors.

FAQ

The HE400VE (4309124) fits the Cummins ISM, QSM, and M11 engines with VGT turbo systems. Cross-reference numbers include 4309124RX, 4955428, 2881791, 2836369, 3776836, 3776839, 3792250, and 5458510.

No. The HX55 is a fixed-geometry turbo with no electronic actuator and no variable vanes. The HE400VE is a VGT turbo with an electronic actuator and adjustable vanes. They are used on different model years and emissions tiers of the ISM/M11 platform. Check your turbo for an electronic actuator box to identify which one you have.

No. This listing is the turbo assembly only. Reuse your existing actuator if it tests good and run ECM calibration after install. Contact us if you need both components.

If there is an electronic actuator (a metal box with a wiring harness) bolted to the turbo housing, you have a VGT - either HE400VE or similar. If the turbo has no electronics at all, it is an HX55. You can also check the turbo nameplate for the part number.

Brand new, 100% new components including billet compressor wheel, dynamically balanced. Ships with gaskets. No core charge. One-year unlimited-mileage warranty.

Yes. US stock, volume pricing for shops, fleets, rebuilders, and distributors.

HE400VE VGT Turbo for Cummins ISM, QSM, and M11

The HE400VE brought variable-geometry technology to the Cummins ISM/QSM/M11 engine family. If your ISM or QSM has an electronic actuator on the turbo and adjustable vanes in the turbine housing, this is likely your turbo. If your engine runs the older HX55 with no electronics, see our HX55 page instead.

HE400VE vs HX55 - which does your engine use?

Cummins used both fixed-geometry (HX55) and VGT (HE400VE) turbos on the ISM/M11 platform depending on the model year and emissions tier. Here is how to tell them apart:

FeatureHE400VE (this page)HX55
TypeVGT - variable geometry vanesFixed geometry, no vanes
Electronic actuatorYes - mounted on turbine housingNone
Wiring harnessYes - actuator connects to ECMNone
Calibration on installYes - ECM VGT calibration neededNone - bolt on and go
Emissions tierLater model, stricter emissionsEarlier model

The simplest check: if there is an electronic box (actuator) bolted to the turbo housing with a wiring harness running to the ECM, you have a VGT - either HE400VE or a related model. If the turbo has no electronics at all, it is an HX55.

Why the VGT design matters for ISM/QSM

The VGT vanes close at low RPM to speed up exhaust flow and build boost quickly, then open at high RPM to reduce backpressure. This gives the ISM/QSM a noticeably wider power band compared to the fixed HX55. The ECM also uses vane position during engine braking and DPF regen cycles. When the VGT fails, the engine typically goes into derate or limp mode because the ECM can no longer control boost properly.

Common failure patterns

  • Vane ring sticking - soot buildup jams the vanes. DPF regen issues upstream accelerate this. Symptoms: derate codes, poor throttle response.
  • Actuator failure - internal gear strip or motor failure. Diagnose separately from the turbo body before ordering.
  • Bearing wear - shaft play develops over 300k-500k miles. Oil in intake, rising EGT, shaft wobble.
  • Compressor wheel damage - foreign object ingestion from failed air filter. Metallic noise and immediate boost loss.

Installation

  • If reusing the existing actuator: inspect the gear teeth and motor response, reinstall on the new turbo, run ECM VGT calibration after startup.
  • Replace exhaust manifold and oil drain gaskets (included).
  • Flush and inspect oil feed line. Replace if internally restricted.
  • Prime with clean oil, hand-spin shaft, idle 3-5 minutes before loading.
  • Verify VGT position tracking through ECM before putting the truck to work.
