HE400VG 4352565RX Turbocharger for Cummins ISL ISC 8.9L

HE400VG

The HE400VG (4352565RX) is the Holset VGT turbocharger for the Cummins ISL 8.9L and ISC 8.3L engines — the mid-range diesel family used in medium-duty trucks (Freightliner M2, International DuraStar/4000 series), transit buses, motorhomes, and industrial equipment. The same turbo model name is used on the larger ISX15 platform, but this is a different, smaller HE400VG sized for the 8.9L class. It uses a VGT vane ring and electronic actuator for boost control, similar in concept to the ISX HE400VG but with different compressor and turbine sizing. This listing is for the turbo without actuator. Built new, dynamically balanced, ships with gaskets. We supply shops, fleets, and distributors.

FAQ

The HE400VG (4352565RX) fits the Cummins ISL 8.9L and ISC 8.3L engines (ICP platform). Cross-reference numbers include 2836434, 2838938, 2839452, 2841326, 2842382, 3774365, 3795878, 5354674, and 4956124.

No. Cummins uses the HE400VG name on both the ISL 8.9L and the ISX 15.0L, but they are completely different turbo assemblies with different sizing. ISX HE400VG part numbers (like 5459710 or 5459711) will not fit the ISL, and vice versa. Always match by part number, not just turbo model name.

No. This is the turbo assembly only. Reuse your existing actuator if it is functional and run ECM VGT calibration after install. Contact us if you need both components.

The ISL/ISC 8.9L is used in medium-duty trucks (Freightliner M2, International DuraStar, Kenworth T270/T370), transit buses, Class A diesel motorhomes, and various industrial equipment including generators and pumps.

Brand new, 100% new components, dynamically balanced. Ships with gaskets. No core charge. One-year unlimited-mileage warranty.

Yes. US stock, volume pricing for shops, fleets, transit agencies, and distributors.

HE400VG for Cummins ISL / ISC 8.9L: Mid-Range VGT Turbo

The Cummins ISL and ISC engines are the workhorses of the medium-duty segment — class 6-7 trucks, transit buses, RVs, and industrial equipment. The HE400VG VGT on this platform brings the same variable-geometry technology used on the bigger ISX engines down to the 8.9L class, with a smaller turbo frame matched to the mid-range displacement.

ISL/ISC HE400VG vs ISX15 HE400VG — different turbos, same name

Cummins uses the HE400VG designation on both the ISL 8.9L and the ISX 15.0L. They are completely different turbo assemblies with different compressor sizes, turbine sizes, bearing housings, and actuator configurations. Never cross-reference ISX part numbers with ISL parts — they will not fit. Always verify by the part number on your turbo nameplate or by engine serial number.

VGT operation on the ISL

The VGT system works the same way as on the larger ISX: electronically controlled vanes in the turbine housing adjust exhaust flow to optimize boost across the RPM range. The ECM also uses vane position for engine braking and DPF regen. When the vanes stick or the actuator fails, the engine goes into derate. The diagnostic and replacement process is the same as on ISX VGT turbos — check whether the turbo body or the actuator is at fault before ordering parts.

Failure modes

  • Vane ring soot buildup — the ISL runs through frequent DPF regen cycles, especially in stop-and-go bus and delivery truck applications. Incomplete regens push soot into the VGT mechanism.
  • Actuator failure — gear strip, motor failure, position sensor drift. The ISL actuator is prone to the same failures as the ISX version. Diagnose separately from the turbo body.
  • Bearing wear — shaft play, oil past seals, rising EGT. Common at 200k-400k miles on medium-duty applications.

Installation

  • This listing does not include the actuator. Reuse your existing actuator if it tests good and run ECM calibration after install.
  • Replace exhaust manifold and oil drain gaskets (included).
  • Flush oil feed line. Prime turbo with clean oil before startup.
  • Idle 3-5 minutes, verify VGT tracking via ECM before loading.
