HE400VG 5602145 Turbocharger for Cummins X15 EPA21 450-500HP

HE400VG

The HE400VG 5602145 is the current-production Holset VGT turbocharger for the Cummins X15 EPA21 engine, covering 2021-2023+ model years at 450-500 HP (CPL 5535, 5779). The EPA21 generation introduced a redesigned compressor wheel compared to the earlier EPA17 variants (5459710 and 5459711). The turbine housing and VGT vane mechanism carry over, but the compressor side was re-profiled to meet updated emissions and efficiency targets. EPA17 and EPA21 HE400VG turbos are not interchangeable - the compressor wheel geometry is different. This listing is for the turbo assembly without VGT electronic actuator. Built new, dynamically balanced, ships with gaskets. We supply shops, fleets, and distributors.

FAQ

The 5602145 (EPA21) has a redesigned compressor wheel with different inducer/exducer geometry optimized for EPA21 emissions targets. The 5459710 (EPA17 Efficiency) uses a 63mm round-edge inducer designed for the earlier emissions calibration. The turbine side and VGT mechanism are the same. They are not interchangeable - the compressor mismatch causes airflow and emissions issues.

No. The compressor wheel profiles are different between EPA17 and EPA21. Installing the wrong generation turbo will result in mismatched airflow, potential derate codes, and poor combustion. Always match the turbo to your engine's emissions generation.

No. This is the turbo assembly only. Reuse your existing actuator if it tests good and run ECM calibration after install. Contact us if you need a matched turbo-and-actuator set.

Check the engine dataplate for the CPL number. CPL 5535 and 5779 are EPA21. You can also go by model year - 2021+ is generally EPA21. For transition-year trucks (late 2020 builds), verify by engine serial number (ESN). Send us your ESN and we will confirm.

HE400VG 5602145: The EPA21-Generation X15 VGT Turbo

The 2021+ Cummins X15 uses an updated HE400VG that looks nearly identical to the EPA17 version but has a different compressor wheel profile inside. Installing an EPA17 turbo (5459710 or 5459711) on an EPA21 engine - or the other way around - results in mismatched airflow characteristics, potential derate codes, and suboptimal combustion. The part number on the turbo nameplate is the only reliable way to confirm which generation you have.

What changed from EPA17 to EPA21

Cummins redesigned the compressor wheel profiles between EPA17 and EPA21. The changes affect inducer diameter, exducer diameter, and blade geometry. The turbine side, bearing housing, and VGT vane ring carry over from the EPA17 platform - the difference is entirely on the compressor side.

GenerationPart NumberHP RangeCompressor
EPA17 Efficiency5459710400-500 HP63mm round-edge inducer
EPA17 Performance5459711525 HPLarger profile
EPA21 (this page)5602145450-500 HPRedesigned profile for EPA21 emissions

The EPA21 compressor redesign was driven by updated emissions and efficiency targets. Cummins adjusted the wheel profiles to optimize the balance between boost response, peak airflow, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) characteristics at the new certification points. The result is a turbo that works within a tighter operating window - which is why cross-generation swaps cause issues.

How to confirm you need the EPA21 turbo

Three ways to verify:

  • Check the turbo nameplate on the compressor housing. If you see 5602145, 5551142, 5551140, 5551141, 6317948, or 6317895, you need this EPA21 turbo.
  • Check your engine's CPL (Control Parts List) on the engine dataplate. CPL 5535 and 5779 are EPA21 ratings.
  • Model year: 2021 and newer X15 engines are generally EPA21. Pre-2021 engines are EPA17. Transition-year trucks (late 2020 builds) can go either way - verify by ESN.

Turbo only vs with actuator

This listing is the turbo assembly without VGT actuator. If your existing actuator is functional, transfer it to the new turbo and run the ECM calibration procedure after install. If you need both components, contact us - we can supply the turbo and actuator as a matched, pre-calibrated set.

Installation

  • Transfer your existing actuator if it tests good. Run ECM VGT calibration after install.
  • Replace exhaust manifold and oil drain gaskets (included).
  • Inspect and flush the oil feed line before connecting.
  • Prime with clean oil, hand-spin shaft, idle 3-5 minutes before loading.
  • Verify VGT position tracking through ECM before putting the truck under load.
