HX40W 2881887 Turbocharger for Cummins ISC 8.3L CM850

HX40W

The HX40W is the Holset turbocharger for the Cummins ISC 8.3L engine on the CM850 platform, used in Class 3-8 trucks from 2004-2009. This is a fixed-geometry turbo with a pneumatic wastegate actuator for boost regulation. The W indicates water-cooled bearing housing. The HX40W is the standard stock turbo for the ISC before VGT turbos (HE431VE, HE400VG) took over on later emissions tiers. Holset assembly number 2842810, Cummins OEM 2881887. Our HX40W ships new with all new components including the wastegate actuator, dynamically balanced, with gaskets. We supply shops, fleets, and distributors.

FAQ

The HX40W (2881887 / 2842810) fits the Cummins ISC 8.3L on the CM850 platform, used in Class 3-8 trucks from 2004-2009. OEM numbers include 4033649, 4039917, 4039916, 4089930, and 4046099.

It has a pneumatic wastegate — not a VGT. The wastegate uses a boost-pressure-controlled canister to regulate peak boost. No electronics, no variable vanes. If your engine uses the CM2150 platform with a VGT, you need the HE431VE instead.

Yes. The W in HX40W indicates water-cooled. The bearing housing has coolant passages. Connect both coolant lines and bleed the system during installation.

Yes. Ships complete with the pneumatic wastegate actuator and mounting gaskets.

Brand new, 100% new components, dynamically balanced. No core charge. One-year unlimited-mileage warranty.

Yes. US stock, volume pricing for shops, fleets, and distributors.

HX40W for Cummins ISC 8.3L: The Pre-VGT Stock Turbo

The ISC 8.3L powered a wide range of medium-duty trucks before the transition to VGT turbos. The HX40W is the stock turbo for the CM850 platform. It uses a simple pneumatic wastegate for boost control — no electronics, no VGT vanes — making it one of the easiest Cummins turbos to install and diagnose.

HX40W vs HE431VE vs HE400VG on the ISC/ISL

Cummins used three different turbo types on the ISC/ISL 8.3-8.9L family depending on the model year and emissions tier:

TurboTypePlatformYears

HE431VEVGT + 12V actuatorCM21502007-2013

Check your engine dataplate for the CM platform designation. If it says CM850, you need the HX40W.

Common failure modes

  • Wastegate stuck open — low boost across the RPM range, loss of power, black smoke. The pneumatic canister diaphragm cracks or the rod seizes.
  • Wastegate stuck closed — overboosting at full load. Carbon buildup on the wastegate flapper.
  • Bearing wear — shaft play, turbo whine, oil past seals. Common at 200k-400k miles.
  • Coolant leak at bearing housing — the water-cooled bearing housing uses O-rings that degrade over time. Replace all coolant seals when installing a new turbo.

Installation

  • Ships with wastegate actuator and gaskets. Connect oil lines, coolant lines, and the boost reference hose to the wastegate canister.
  • Replace coolant O-rings at the bearing housing. Bleed coolant system before startup.
  • Flush oil feed line. Replace oil drain gasket.
  • Test wastegate actuator movement with regulated air supply after install.
  • Prime with clean oil, idle 3-5 minutes before loading.
